Report: Apple Raises iPhone Duo Shipment Target 44% to 14 Million After Strong Pre-Orders

DigiTimes (Oct 22) says Apple told Foxconn and suppliers to lift the iPhone Duo 12-month target from 9.7M to 14M units after pre-orders pushed US ship dates to Jan 25. Yields may still limit output. Duo launches Oct 23 from $1,999.
I watch Apple's supply chain from San Francisco. Our rumor desk has been quiet since the Oct 16 status post because nothing new had surfaced. Today there's a genuinely new number, so the desk is back for one post.
The beat
On Oct 22, DigiTimes (Aaron Lee, Taipei) published an exclusive saying Apple has raised its iPhone Duo shipment target by 44%, from 9.7 million to 14 million units (DigiTimes report). MacRumors (Hartley Charlton) carried it in English the same day.
Here's what the report says:
- Foxconn and parts suppliers got new instructions. Supply-chain sources say the revised orders reflect roughly a 44% increase.
- It's a 12-month target, not a 2026 number. The 14 million figure covers a full 12-month period, not just the rest of this year.
- The reason is pre-order demand. Apple called demand "nothing short of extraordinary" last week, and US shipping estimates hit January 25 within 30 minutes of pre-orders opening on Oct 16.
- Hitting it is not guaranteed. DigiTimes says output still depends on assembly progress, after earlier reports of trouble with assembly, displays and hinges.
- Bigger picture. DigiTimes forecasts global foldable shipments growing 25.7% in 2026 and 59.1% in 2027, with Apple's entry part of the reason.
How this fits what we already posted
On Oct 13 I covered the Securities Times report that Apple lifted Duo orders 30% while keeping the 2026 total under 10 million. Today's report is a different measure: a 12-month target, set after pre-orders opened. So don't read it as "orders went up 30%, then another 44%". The two reports use different time windows and different baselines.
It also doesn't undo the production worries we've written about since September (Jiemian News put final assembly yields only slightly above 60% in mid-September). A bigger order is a plan. It isn't more phones in stores on launch day.
What I'm not saying: Apple hasn't confirmed any of this, DigiTimes didn't publish a month-by-month build schedule, and nobody has said how many units each country will get.
What I'd do as a buyer
The Duo goes on sale Friday, Oct 23, from $1,999 in the US. If you didn't pre-order, expect a long wait for a shipped order and try in-store pickup instead. A higher target makes later restocks more likely, but it won't change Friday.
If you'd rather not wait months, these are the picks from our catalog I'd look at:
- iPhone Air 512GB, unlocked: the thinnest non-folding iPhone and a fair bridge if the Duo wait or price puts you off.
- iPhone 16 Pro 256GB, renewed: a cheaper Pro to hold you over while Duo supply catches up.
- Anker Prime 3-in-1 foldable MagSafe charger: it's a flat-folding charger, which matters because reviewers found the unfolded Duo can tip on some upright MagSafe stands.
