Report: Apple Raised iPhone Duo Orders 30% Before Pre-Orders, Shifted 18 Pro Orders to the Pro Max

Securities Times (Oct 10, via 9to5Mac) says Apple lifted iPhone Duo orders by 30% while keeping the 2026 total under 10 million, and moved 10-15% of iPhone 18 Pro orders to the Pro Max. Pre-orders still open Oct 16 at 5 a.m. PT.
I watch Apple's supply chain from San Francisco, and yesterday I wrote about Mark Gurman's warning that iPhone Duo launch stock will be limited. A day later there's a new supply-chain data point pointing the other way on demand, so here it is.
The beat
On Oct 10, China's Securities Times reported, citing sources at Apple supply-chain companies, that Apple has made a structural change to its fall 2026 phone orders (original report in Chinese). 9to5Mac (Ryan Christoffel) brought it to English readers on Oct 12.
Here's what the report says:
- iPhone Duo orders up 30%. The total for the foldable still stays under 10 million units. 9to5Mac notes that earlier estimates put Duo production at about 6 to 7 million, so the new target is likely close to 10 million. That math is 9to5Mac's reading, not a number Securities Times printed
- iPhone 18 Pro down, Pro Max up. Orders for the iPhone 18 Pro were reportedly cut by 10% to 15%, and iPhone 18 Pro Max orders were raised by the same 10% to 15%. The total for the Pro line is unchanged
- That clashes with Nikkei. 9to5Mac points out the "Pro line total unchanged" claim contradicts the recent Nikkei Asia report of iPhone 18 Pro order cuts
- A demand signal from China. The same article says JD.com's Apple flagship store had more than 2.01 million iPhone Duo reservation sign-ups as of 2 p.m. on Oct 10 (China time)
How this fits what we already posted
In September we covered Nikkei's report that Apple was building only a few hundred foldables a day after an extra quality check, and yesterday Gurman said Apple had once feared a November start and that stock will stay tight. Today's report doesn't cancel any of that. A bigger order is a plan to build more units over the rest of 2026. It is not proof that more phones will be on shelves on Oct 23. Launch-day stock and later restocks are two different things.
What I'm not saying: Apple hasn't confirmed any of this, the report doesn't give the original order baseline or the delivery schedule, and nobody has published how many units each country gets. A JD.com reservation count is a sign of interest in China, not a sales figure.
What I'd do as a buyer
Nothing about Friday changes. Duo pre-orders still open Oct 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific (3 p.m. in Israel), sales start Oct 23, and the US price starts at $1,999. Apple's Get Ready page in the Apple Store app and on apple.com is live now, so you can save your color, storage, carrier, trade-in and payment ahead of time and check out faster when orders open. If the bigger order holds, I'd expect shipping dates to recover faster in November than they would have, but I wouldn't count on that for launch week.
If the Duo's price or the wait puts you off, the picks below are the ones I'd look at instead, plus a MagSafe charger that works with whichever iPhone you end up with.
