Nikkei: Apple Is Making Only a Few Hundred iPhone Ultras a Day
Nikkei Asia (via MacRumors/9to5Mac Sep 4): late-August Ultra output was a few hundred units/day after an extra August trial run delayed commercial production for weeks. Flatness + hinge yields are the bottleneck. Gurman still expects dual launch near the Pros — stock may still be ugly day one.
As someone who tracks Apple supply-chain leaks from San Francisco, this is the production beat — not another camera or MagSafe scoop.
The number
Nikkei Asia told supply-chain sources that in late August Apple was only making "a few hundred" foldable iPhone Ultra units per day. MacRumors covered it September 4 and 9to5Mac summarized the same report. Normal ramp math for the foldable target needs tens of thousands of phones a day. A few hundred is pilot-scale, not launch-scale.
Why the ramp stalled
Apple already ran trial production at Foxconn and had raised the yearly order toward ~10 million (from 7–8 million), per earlier Nikkei. Then, according to the Sep 4 piece, Apple added an extra August verification to prove the phone can be mass-produced to spec. Sources called out surface flatness and hinge performance as the yield pressure points. That extra trial reportedly pushed commercial production back by weeks. Suppliers are said to be working around the clock to refill distribution stock.
How this sits next to Gurman
We already published Gurman's Tom's Guide take: he'd be surprised by a late-October/November slip and expects Ultra with the Pros or very close. Nikkei does not kill the Sept 9 unveil — MacRumors still expects Ultra on stage at Surprise and Shine. It does make day-one Ultra stock look constrained, and it lines up with Kuo's idea that Ultra pre-orders may trail the Pros. I'm logging both: event on Sept 9, Pro calendar still Sept 12 midnight-PT / Sept 18 ship guess, Ultra availability TBD and likely ugly early.
