Leaker Says iPhone 18 Pro and Duo Were Once Planned With 16GB RAM — Shipped Pros Have 12GB

Weibo leaker Instant Digital (Oct 6) says Apple once planned 16GB RAM for iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Xcode 27 confirms the shipped Pros have 12GB; Duo still expected at 12GB. No date or reason given. Duo pre-orders Oct 16.

I track Apple supply-chain chatter from San Francisco, and this is the first genuinely new iPhone 18 / Duo data point since our Sep 19 desk-status note, where I said we'd stay silent until something fresh landed. This one counts, with caveats.

The beat

On Tuesday, Oct 6, the Weibo leaker Instant Digital posted that Apple at one point planned 16GB of RAM for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Duo. MacRumors (Hartley Charlton) and AppleInsider (Mike Wuerthele) both picked it up the same day.

What we actually know, in plain English:

  • The shipped iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have 12GB, confirmed through Xcode 27 data per MacRumors, the same as the iPhone 17 Pro models
  • The iPhone Duo is still expected at 12GB, but the Xcode data that verified the Pro models did not include the foldable yet
  • The post is brief and does not say when Apple considered 16GB or why it dropped it
  • AppleInsider notes a chip takes two to three years from concept to production, so the 16GB plan may predate the memory crunch entirely

I'm not claiming Apple cut RAM because of cost. That's the likely explanation MacRumors offers, not something the leaker said.

Why it matters vs what we already posted

On Sep 9 we covered Gurman's report that memory costs pushed price talk on the foldable from $1,999 toward $2,199. MacRumors ties today's claim to the same story: The Bell reported in March that Samsung would supply 12GB modules for the Duo at sharply rising prices, and Kuo has said DRAM shortages were forcing Apple to scale back 2026 hardware plans. For two years the rumor mill (Kuo in April 2025, Jeff Pu in January) pointed at 12GB, so 16GB is a lone outlier, not a reversal.

What I'd do with it

If you're on the fence about the Duo, this changes nothing about the hardware you can buy: 12GB is what's expected, and the real check comes when Xcode or teardowns confirm the foldable. Calendar is unchanged: Duo pre-orders Oct 16, availability Oct 23. If you just need a phone now, the cards below are the bridges I keep pointing readers to. Check the live Amazon price on each card before you buy, since our catalog prices can lag.

Camera AirPods are still a 2027 story; nothing new there today.
