I'm Jordan Lee. Culinary school, restaurant kitchens, now a home cook in Austin. Our homepage has teased "15 Kitchen Gadgets That Are Actually Worth Your Money" for a long time. That URL 404s. This is the post that should have been sitting there — shorter, more honest, and not a list of avocado slicers.
I am not going to invent a 15-item catalog. You need a few tools that survive weeknights. Fancy is a garlic rocker you use twice.
What I would actually put in a drawer
1. Instant-read thermometer — stop guessing protein
Alpha Grillers instant-read (ASIN B00S93EQUK). Our catalog on August 22, 2026 showed $12.31 (list $19.99), 4.8 stars, huge review count. Confirm live. A thermometer is the gadget that pays for itself the first time you do not dry out a chicken. Kitchen-tested means I temp thighs and pork, not "vibes."
Skip the $80 Super-Fast branding unless you already cook a lot of steak. A $12 probe you will actually replace when you drop it beats a trophy probe you baby.
2. Kitchen shears — I use these more than a boning knife at home
iBayam 2-pack shears (ASIN B08FLKHG8J). Catalog August 22: $7.99 (was $11.99). Poultry, herbs, parchment, packaging. Restaurant kitchens live on shears. Home cooks keep buying $4 scissors that twist.
Wash them. Dry them. Do not dishwasher cheap rivets into mush if you can help it — though these claim dishwasher-safe.
3. One air fryer, not three
Cosori TurboBlaze 6-quart at $89.87 (list $119.99) on our August 22 catalog update. That is the single-basket I recommend in the air-fryer guide. If you want two zones, the Ninja DZ201 was $160 on August 19 (Gizmodo).
An air-fryer-shaped "gadget" under $40 is usually a 2-quart toy.
4. A 6-quart pressure cooker if you cook beans or stock
Instant Pot Duo 6-quart. Independent tracker August 22, 2026: $104.67 vs $109.99 list. Our own card saying $322.82 is wrong — I wrote that up separately. Buy the Duo near $105. Wait for ~$65 if you can.
5. Parchment, not another nonstick spray
Reynolds unbleached parchment (ASIN B07PFYT8MC). Catalog August 22: $3.59. Sheet-pan cooking is how everyday home cooks actually eat vegetables. A $4 roll beats a $40 "crisper tray" you will not store.
What is not worth your money
- Avocado slicers, banana cases, single-job garlic presses if you own a knife
- $30 "smart" measuring spoons
- A seventh cutting board that is not dishwasher-safe or thick enough
- Any gadget whose main feature is an app
Kitchen-tested buying rules
- It must earn a home after the first month. Drawer, hook, or counter. If you cannot name the home, do not buy it.
- Cleanup in 90 seconds or it goes in the dishwasher. I do not hand-wash novelties.
- Use the ASIN. "Ninja air fryer" is six products.
- If our product card is above list, ignore the card. Instant Pot at $323 is the exhibit.
