MacRumors on September 7 walked a deep dive from forum member pdfu: iOS 27 beta code points to five Camera app capabilities Apple has not turned on yet:
- Exposure scopes — waveform or histogram overlays so you can see what is too dark or too bright while you shoot
- Focus peaking + highlight warnings — colored edges on what is sharp, plus overexposure overlays (solid, pulsing, zebra stripes, or checkerboard)
- Repeated self-timer — countdown restarts immediately after each frame so you can fire a timed burst
- Manual focus lock — Final Cut Camera–style lens-position control; code now gates it to devices that ship with iOS 27 or later, so no current iPhone gets it
- Aperture-based image correction — lens corrections that blend across up to four reference points depending on aperture setting
None of these are reachable in the public betas today. Apple could still hold some back past Wednesday.
Why it matters for iPhone 18 Pro
We already covered the variable-aperture hardware rumor (actuator production, Max-vs-both-Pro disagreement). This Sep 7 code note is different: software that expects an adjustable iris is sitting in iOS 27. Manual focus locked to new hardware is the other tell. I am not inventing a launch-day Camera UI — I am logging that the stack is being built for phones that do not exist in anyone's pocket yet.
