Gurman: Apple Is Staging a Big iPhone Duo Store Showcase, but Launch Stock Will Be Limited

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman (Oct 11) says Apple is sending 150+ Duo demo units to Fifth Avenue and about 20 to a typical store, but supply is tighter than planned. Apple once feared a November start. Pre-orders still open Oct 16 at 5 a.m. PT, $1,999.

I track Apple supply-chain chatter from San Francisco, and on Saturday I wrote that this desk would stay silent until something genuinely new landed. Mark Gurman delivered on Sunday, so here's the first fresh iPhone Duo data point since our Oct 7 RAM post.

The beat

In his Sunday report, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman laid out how Apple is setting up its stores for the foldable iPhone Duo launch, and he paired it with a warning: stock will be limited. MacRumors (Hartley Charlton) and 9to5Mac both covered it on Oct 11.

Here's what the report says, in plain English:

  • Supply is tighter than Apple planned. About two months ago, Apple reportedly thought production limits could push sales back to later in November. It has since built up enough inventory to launch this month, but stock is still expected to stay limited
  • Demo units vary a lot by store. Fifth Avenue in New York is expected to get more than 150 units, the Apple Park Visitor Center nearly 100, and Chicago's Michigan Avenue, The Grove in Los Angeles and Manhattan's Upper West Side about 30 to 40 each. A typical non-flagship store averages about 20
  • New fixtures. Most stores add an extra spotlight table, and a new fixture shows the phone folding and unfolding. Apple also built a MagSafe stand that holds an open Duo next to two regular iPhones for side-by-side comparisons
  • Presto machines for Duo. Apple's in-box wireless update system is being adapted to the Duo, and it will also add the buyer's name to the first-boot greeting (we mentioned that personalization in Saturday's status note)

The dates haven't moved: pre-orders open Oct 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, sales start Oct 23, and the 256GB model starts at $1,999 in the US.

How this fits what we already posted

Back on Sep 5 we covered Nikkei's report that Apple was building only a few hundred foldables a day in late August after an extra verification run. Gurman's new detail closes that loop. The ramp was bad enough that Apple reportedly considered a November start, it recovered enough to hold the October date, and it didn't recover enough to make launch day easy. That's a clearer picture than we had a month ago, and it comes from a named reporter, not a reseller rumor.

What I'm not saying: nobody has published unit counts for launch inventory, and Gurman didn't say how fast stock will refill after Oct 23. Anyone claiming a specific sell-out timeline is guessing.

What I'd do as a buyer

If you want a Duo in October, be ready right at 5 a.m. Pacific on Oct 16 (that's 3 p.m. in Israel and 8 a.m. on the East Coast) rather than planning to walk in on the 23rd. If you just want to try one first, the flagship stores above will have far more demo units than your local mall store.

If the $1,999 price or a possible wait puts you off, these are on our catalog right now:

  • iPhone Air (512GB, unlocked) is the thin, light option if what you really want is a slim phone and not a fold
  • A renewed iPhone 16 Pro (256GB, unlocked) is the cheaper stand-in if you'd rather wait out the first Duo stock crunch
  • A MagSafe 3-in-1 charger works with whichever iPhone you end up with, Duo included, since it keeps MagSafe

I'll keep watching for real data on restock timing or delivery estimates after pre-orders open. If nothing new shows up, this desk goes quiet again.
