Brita Elite 2-Pack Is $29.78 Live and Still Beats the $20.99 Standard 4-Pack Per Gallon

Live Chicago 60601: Brita Standard 4-pack is $20.99 ($5.25/filter, 40 gal each, about 13.1¢/gal). Brita Elite 2-pack is $29.78 ($14.89/filter, 120 gal each, about 12.4¢/gal). Elite is the pick; our $14.99 catalog cards are stale.

Verdict: The Brita Standard replacement filters, 4 pack are $20.99 live to Chicago ZIP 60601, about $5.25 per filter. The Brita Elite replacement filters, 2 pack are $29.78 live, about $14.89 per filter. The Elite sticker looks almost three times worse per filter, but Brita rates each Elite for 120 gallons and each Standard for 40 gallons. Divide by gallons and Elite is the cheaper water: about 12.4¢ a gallon versus about 13.1¢. I'd buy Elite.
I cover value from Chicago. I am not running a contaminant lab or a flow-rate stopwatch. I'm asking one budget question: which refill costs less per gallon of filtered water when both are sold by Amazon today?
What it is
The Brita Standard 4 pack is the classic white pitcher filter. The listing says each one lasts 40 gallons or about 2 months for an average household, is WQA NSF/ANSI certified to reduce chlorine (taste and odor), copper, mercury and cadmium, and fits every Brita pitcher and dispenser except Stream. Live buy box: $20.99 (Amazon shows $5.25/count). Our catalog card still says $14.99, so it is stale. Sold by Amazon.com, ships from Amazon.com, in stock. Rating: 4.8 from about 227,800 ratings.
The Brita Elite 2 pack is the longer-life filter with what Brita calls a carbon core. The listing says each one lasts 120 gallons or about 6 months and is WQA NSF/ANSI certified to reduce 99% of lead plus microplastics, chlorine, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and 30+ contaminants. Same fit rule: every Brita pitcher and dispenser except Stream. Live: $29.78 (Amazon shows $14.89/count). Our catalog card says $14.99, also stale. Sold and shipped by Amazon.com, in stock. Rating: 4.6 from about 56,400 ratings.
Who it's for
Buy Elite at $29.78 if you refill a Brita every day and want the lowest cost per gallon. On Brita's own ratings, two Elite filters are 240 gallons for $29.78. To get the same 240 gallons out of Standard you need six filters, which is a pack and a half, roughly $31.49 at today's price. You also change the filter three times less often, and you get the lead certification that Standard doesn't list.
Buy Standard at $20.99 if cash today matters more than cost per gallon, or your pitcher sits mostly unused and a filter would hit its two-month mark long before it filters 40 gallons. In that case the time limit, not the gallon rating, decides when you swap, and the cheaper cartridge wastes less.
Who should skip
Skip both if you own a Brita Stream pitcher. Neither of these fits it. Skip both if you need a certified lead filter for a specific water report and haven't checked what your water actually contains; Brita's own fine print says substances reduced may not be in all users' water. Skip Standard if lead is the reason you are filtering at all, since its listing doesn't claim lead reduction. Skip any marketplace seller that isn't Amazon.com unless you meant to buy from them; both buy boxes are Amazon today.
Honest nits
- Our catalog cards are stale. Both cards say $14.99. Live is $20.99 for Standard and $29.78 for Elite. I'm quoting the Chicago 60601 buy boxes only.
- The Standard listing is sloppy. The title and Amazon's $5.25/count say four filters, but a couple of bullet points still talk about a "1-Count" pack. Check the pack size in your cart before you check out.
- The gallon ratings are Brita's, not mine. My per-gallon math ($5.25 / 40 and $14.89 / 120) only holds if you actually push the full rated volume through each filter. Swap early and the math moves toward Standard.
- The win is small. About 0.7¢ a gallon. Elite earns the pick on fewer swaps and the longer contaminant list, not on a dramatic savings number.
- Elite filters slower in a lot of owners' experience. I won't invent a timing number. If you hate waiting for a pitcher to drip, that's a real trade-off.
Value verdict
Buy Elite at $29.78 for the lowest cost per gallon, fewer changes, and the lead claim. Buy Standard at $20.99 only if you want the smaller upfront spend or you barely use the pitcher. Don't judge either off our $14.99 cards today.
Worth paying almost three times more per filter? Yes, because each Elite is rated for three times the water and ends up slightly cheaper per gallon.
