Apple's Surprise and Shine Is Sept 9 — Pro Pre-Orders May Open Saturday Sept 12 at Midnight PT
Official invite is locked for Wednesday Sept 9 at 10 a.m. PT. MacRumors' calendar read (Aug 28 + Sep 2) puts iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders on Saturday Sept 12 at midnight PT because Friday is 9/11, with Pro shipping likely Sept 18. Ultra timing still split: Kuo vs Gurman.
As someone who tracks Apple leaks from San Francisco every week, this is the calendar beat — not another camera or chip scoop.
The invite is official
Apple locked Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific with the tagline "Surprise and Shine." MacRumors covered the invite on August 26. Stream: apple.com, YouTube, Apple TV app. Expected on stage (still rumor, not slides): iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra. Base iPhone 18 stays in the spring-2027 bucket we already covered in the split-launch post.
Pre-order wrinkle: skip Friday Sept 11
MacRumors on August 28 (Macwelt via Macworld) and the September 2 calendar recap say the usual Friday pre-order would land on September 11 — the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Apple moved 6s pre-orders to Saturday, September 12 in 2015 for the same reason. The working rumor:
- Pre-orders: Saturday, September 12 at 12:00 a.m. PT (midnight — not the usual 5 a.m. PT)
- Likely Pro release: Friday, September 18
I'm treating midnight PT as plausible but unconfirmed. The Saturday date has stronger precedent than the exact clock time.
Ultra may not share the same pre-order window
Same Sep 2 piece cites Ming-Chi Kuo: Ultra manufacturing is tight, so foldable pre-orders may trail the Pros and could slip into Q4 2026 (think iPhone X vs iPhone 8 in 2017). That sits next to Gurman's Tom's Guide take we already published — he'd be surprised by a late-October/November slip and expects dual launch or within weeks. I'm logging both. Don't buy a calendar fantasy for Ultra day-one stock.
