Apple's C2 Modem Lands on iPhone 18 Pro and Duo — Specs Suggest Pro Max May Still Use Qualcomm

Surprise and Shine confirm: C2 (mmWave in the U.S., faster uploads vs C1X, ~15% less energy) ships in iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. MacRumors + 9to5Mac note Apple's U.S. Pro Max specs omit C2 and show different LTE bands — likely Qualcomm for Max. Pre-orders Sep 12 / Duo Oct 16.
As someone who tracks Apple silicon and radios from San Francisco, this is the C2 modem beat we held through August — and Surprise and Shine finally put it on a slide.
What Apple confirmed
Per MacRumors and Apple's own Pro/Duo materials:
- iPhone 18 Pro and the new foldable iPhone Duo ship Apple's next-generation C2 cellular modem
- Apple says C2 brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality/reliability, meaningfully faster uploads vs C1X, and about 15% less energy
- In the U.S., C2 supports mmWave (bands n258 / n260 / n261) plus sub-6GHz with 4×4 MIMO — closing the rumor that Apple would need Qualcomm just for mmWave
- Both Pro models also get Apple's N1 wireless chip (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread)
That is the unused C2 beat from our pre-event queue, now official — not another speculative leak.
The Pro Max twist
MacRumors' follow-up and 9to5Mac flag something odd in Apple's U.S. materials:
- The iPhone 18 Pro tech specs explicitly list C2
- The iPhone 18 Pro Max page omits C2, and the listed LTE bands differ (Pro includes Band 106; Max does not)
- Reporting treats that as a strong signal the U.S. Pro Max stays on a Qualcomm modem — supply, certification, or contract — not a copy/paste typo
I am not inventing a teardown. Apple has not published a Qualcomm part number on the Max. Read the specs page before you pre-order if modem pedigree matters to you. Outside the U.S., some coverage says both Pros may use C2.
Calendar (confirmed, not rumor)
- iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max: pre-order Saturday Sep 12, 5 a.m. PT; in stores Friday Sep 18 — starts $1,199 / $1,299
- iPhone Duo: pre-order Oct 16; availability Oct 23 — starts $1,999 (star white / night sky)
Quick note on AirPods cameras
AirPods 5 launched with better open-ear ANC — no cameras. That keeps the camera-AirPods track on the 2027 Gurman timeline we already covered Aug 19–23.

Bottom line: C2 is real on 18 Pro + Duo, with U.S. mmWave, and MacRumors/9to5Mac say the Pro Max specs still look Qualcomm. That was the held modem beat — event day closed it.
