Apple Confirms It: U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max Skips C2 for Qualcomm
MacRumors Sep 12 (via Numerama): Apple updated tech specs — iPhone 18 Pro gets C2 worldwide; Pro Max gets C2 everywhere except the U.S. pdfu says U.S. Max (V64) still uses the same Qualcomm radio as iPhone 17. Duo keeps C2 worldwide. AirPods camera still 2027.
As someone who tracks Apple radios from San Francisco, this is the follow-up to our Sep 10 C2 beat — and Apple just closed the speculation gap.
The beat
MacRumors (Joe Rossignol, Sep 12, 3:27 p.m. PDT) reports that Nicolas Lellouche at French site Numerama spotted Apple updating its own tech specs for the new Pros:
- iPhone 18 Pro: C2 modem worldwide
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: C2 in every country except the United States
- iPhone Duo: C2 worldwide (same update)
That upgrades our earlier read from "U.S. Pro Max specs omit C2" to Apple saying it out loud.
Tipster @itspdfu, also cited by MacRumors, says iOS 27 code still points the U.S. Pro Max (device subtype V64) at a Qualcomm radio — and in comments pdfu clarifies it looks like the same Qualcomm M25 / Snapdragon X80 path as iPhone 17, not a confirmed X85. The global Pro Max (V64s) maps to C2 (IN2). Apple has not published a Qualcomm part number on the store page.
Why it matters if you already pre-ordered
Pre-orders opened Sat Sep 12. If modem pedigree is a buying criterion:
- Want Apple C2 in the U.S. → 18 Pro or wait for Duo (Oct 16 / Oct 23)
- Buying U.S. 18 Pro Max → plan on Qualcomm for this generation
- Travel / same silicon worldwide → read Apple's regional specs before you lock storage/color
MacRumors notes the usual speculation (2023 Qualcomm supply deal through 2026) but marks it as guesswork. C2 still claims faster uploads vs C1X, ~15% less energy, and U.S. mmWave where it ships. Real-world C2 vs Qualcomm tests are still ahead.
