Osprey.com still lists the Farpoint 40 around $185. If you pay $193 for black on Amazon, you overpaid for a color. Buy green at $111 if that color is still up.
Why this pack, not a wheeled carry-on
The Farpoint 40 is a travel backpack with a real hipbelt and a LightWire frame. You can stow the harness when you check it or toss it in a compartimiento. Laptop sleeve up to 16 inches. External toiletry pocket for the TSA bin. 40 liters is the domestic carry-on size Osprey designed it around — I still measure the airline, because "most domestic" is not "every regional jet."
I have used this generation as a one-bag weekender: shoes, a week of training clothes, a compact laptop. It is not a backpacking pack. The back panel is travel-comfortable, not a 20-mile vented climb pack. For airport-to-hotel-to-gym, it keeps up.
Women's equivalent is the Fairview 40. Same idea, different harness. I am not quoting a Fairview price I did not check today.
$111 green vs $193 black
This is the only decision that matters this week.
Buy Gopher Green at $111. Same 40L, same sleeve, same hipbelt. Forty percent off list. That is a sale.
Do not buy black at $193 unless you refuse other colors and you missed Osprey.com at $185. Paying more on Amazon for black is a color tax.
If green is gone, check grey at $149 before you default to full-price black.
What I compare it to in our catalog
Our luggage feed has cheaper travel packs that are honest for a different job:

I would rather a client take the Farpoint on sale than a $70 pack that cuts into their shoulders on a cobblestone walk from the train. Performance is the harness, not the number of extra zipper pockets.
Field notes
I do not invent peak-bagging mileage with a Farpoint. I have carried one through security, onto a shuttle, and into a hotel gym. Compression straps keep a half-empty bag from swinging. The laptop sleeve is the pocket I actually use. The stowable harness is why I am willing to gate-check it if a regional bin is tiny.
Zippers are the wear item. Do not overstuff past the carry-on sizer and then yank.
Price-check rules
- Confirm Farpoint 40, not Farpoint 55 or a Fairview you did not mean to buy.
- Use the ASIN. Green is the deal. Black is not.
- Prefer Osprey or Amazon as seller. All Mighty Guarantee is the reason Osprey still wins long-term.
- Measure your airline. 40L is the design target, not a legal shield.
Bottom line
On August 22, 2026, the trail-tested travel pack on sale is the Farpoint 40 in Gopher Green at $111. Do not pay $193 for black. If you need a cheaper school-style pack, the Vault at $85 is a different tool.
Gear that keeps up with family travel is the one you can wear for twenty minutes without hating your traps. That is this pack — on sale, in green.
