Amazon Basics 5 lb Dumbbells Are $15.42 Live — CAP’s Matching Pair Hits $14.99 While Our Card Still Says $38

Amazon shows the Basics green 5 lb pair at $15.42 and the CAP black 5 lb pair at $14.99 today. Our catalog still lists CAP at $38.13. Same starter weights — trust the buy box, not the stale card.

Verdict: The Amazon Basics 5 lb neoprene dumbbell pair is $15.42 live on Amazon today, September 21, 2026 (Style: 5 Pound, Pair; Green). Our catalog has that card at $16.99. The CAP Barbell 5 lb neoprene pair is $14.99 live (Style: 5 lb Pair; Black) while our catalog still says $38.13. Same job: two hex heads, 5 lb each, soft iron under neoprene. I would open the CAP at $14.99 first. I would not pay our $38.13 CAP sticker without checking the buy box.

I cover sports and outdoors from Denver. I am not posting a grip-durometer chart or a garage-floor bounce test. I am asking whether two 5 lb pairs on our catalog are priced like starter weights, or like one stale card.

What it is

The Amazon Basics pair is a hexagon neoprene-coated set, 5 lb each, green on this ASIN, model DB1001 on our card. Cast iron core under the coating. Pair configuration — two dumbbells, about 10 lb on the floor when both land. Our catalog rating blob shows 4.8 from over 120,000 ratings. Live Amazon showed available to ship in 1–2 days with Amazon.com as seller when I checked with a U.S. delivery ZIP. Hex heads do not roll under the couch after a set of curls. That is the whole feature of a hex dumbbell.

The CAP Barbell pair is also a 5 lb pair, black, 3 mm neoprene on the listing, solid iron core, anti-roll hex heads, marked ends. Our catalog card lists weight as 10 pounds for the pair configuration — that matches 5 lb each. Rating blob 4.8 from a couple thousand ratings. Live Amazon showed In Stock, Amazon.com seller, Add to Cart present. Model line on our card: SDN4BPIS-10. Same aisle as the Basics: starter hand weights for a living-room circuit, not a commercial rack.

Who it's for

Buy the CAP at $14.99 if you wanted black, you trust CAP from a bench or a plate, and the live buy box is still near fifteen dollars. That is the number I would text a friend who asked for a first pair of 5s.

Buy the Amazon Basics at $15.42 if you wanted green, you already buy house-brand gym stuff, or CAP's size/color twister moved. $15.42 vs $14.99 is forty-three cents. I am not pretending that gap is a training system.

Buy neither catalog sticker as gospel. Our CAP card at $38.13 (with a crossed $90.55 on the catalog) is not the live story. Our Basics card at $16.99 is close to live — Amazon even showed a “typical” $16.99 next to the $15.42 buy box.

Who should skip

Skip both if you already own a pair of 5s that still have grip. Skip if you needed 10s or 15s for rows and presses — these ASINs are the 5 lb pair. Skip if you wanted rubber hex singles sold one-at-a-time instead of a matched pair. Skip if Amazon shows Currently unavailable for your ZIP when you open the DP — both pages had a usable buy box for a Denver 80202 delivery check today; Israel delivery on the Basics page had no buy box earlier, so confirm your location.

We already covered Nalgene bottles in another post. This is hand weights, not hydration.

Honest nits

Catalog lag on CAP is the story. $38.13 on our card vs $14.99 live is not a “deal badge.” It is a refresh problem. Trust the buy box.
Almost the same live price. $14.99 CAP vs $15.42 Basics is color and brand, not a different weight class.
I will not invent a workout. 5 lb pairs are warm-ups, physio, and high-rep floor work. If you needed a first heavy pair, look at a different ASIN.
Neoprene smell and shed. New neoprene can smell in a small apartment. Wipe it. Do not pretend either coating is immortal after years of chalk and sweat.

Value verdict

Buy the CAP 5 lb pair if live Amazon is still near $14.99 and black is fine. Buy the Amazon Basics if you want green and live is still near $15.42. Buy neither at our stale CAP $38.13 card without opening the page.

Worth the catalog $38.13 for CAP when Amazon shows $14.99? No. Worth sweating the $0.43 between live CAP and live Basics? Also no — pick the color you will actually leave by the mat.
