I’m dizzy, breathless, and still trying to understand how I got here.I’ve just finished reading Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke.Fittingly, my reaction is a bit like Natalie Heller Mills’s. Natalie is a hugely successful “tradwife” influencer whose carefully curated online life celebrates traditional femininity and family values. Then she suddenly finds herself in the year 1855, married to a domineering farmer and living a hard, isolated life with four children on a remote homestead in Idaho. Around her are forests, snow-capped hills, and constant warnings about the dangers waiting beyond the borders of the farm.Yesteryear is a sharp, darkly funny debut that blends satire with psychological suspense. The story moves between Natalie’s life as a pioneer wife and her glossy modern existence, where cracks soon begin to show. As the two worlds collide, the fantasy she has built around herself slowly starts to unravel.This is one of those books that’s almost impossible to put down, but I’ll admit I found parts of it genuinely difficult to read. I’m a sensitive reader, yet I’m very glad I stayed with it, because this is a clever, unsettling, and strangely addictive novel about influencer culture, nostalgia, ever-present chauvinism, and the dangers of romanticising so-called “traditional values”.If you loved The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, I think there’s a good chance you’ll love this too.
