Customer Reviews Summary

Whatever your reading preferences, this is a book that is absolutely guaranteed to impress - and I’d urge you to add it to your reading list. It opens with scenes at a murder trial - with no detail on either the accused or the victim. The story then continues, through alternating timelines, returning to Beth’s thwarted adolescent love affair with Gabriel, then to her marriage to farmer and old flame Frank, rather blighted by the loss of their young son. And when Gabriel and his own young son return to the area, passions are slowly rekindled with fatal consequences. It’s an immensely powerful story of family, of all-consuming love and tested loyalty, coupled with the most riveting courtroom scenes - the way it’s told, beautifully written with such remarkable realism, stunning emotional depth, and a whole slew of unexpected twists and turns, makes it a totally enthralling read. This book deserves every one of the many plaudits it’s received - I thought it was wholly exceptional, and quite wonderful.
