Let me start by saying I have never played the game "Super Mario Galaxy." From that perspective, I didn't have much to go on when I went into the movie. However, I do know enough about my beloved Mario Brothers to follow along, and I can tell you that my lack of knowledge on this particular game did not diminish my enjoyment of the film. As sequels go, this is a darn good follow-up, and I really don't understand the hate this movie has gotten.⚠️ Spoilers ahead. You've been warned. ⚠️The film opens with Princess Rosalina, mother of the Lumas (living, magical stars), being kidnapped by an unknown villain. One of the Lumas manages to escape to the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario, Luigi, Toad, and their new friend Yoshi are preparing to celebrate Princess Peach's birthday. When the Luma tells Peach about Rosalina, she and Toad take off to rescue her, leaving the Mushroom Kingdom in the hands of the Mario Bros. However, things soon get out of hand, particularly when Bowser escapes and reunites with his son, and the Brothers must rejoin Peach and Toad to save both the Mushroom Kingdom and the galaxy in a race across space and time that will test their bonds and show what family really means.Ok, let's talk about the story for a moment. Yes, there IS a story here. Is there a lot going on? Yes. Does this mean there is no plot? Heck no! Here's the plot for you: Princess Rosalina is kidnapped. Princess Peach and Toad take off to rescue her. Mario and Luigi soon join her and they work together to stop both Bowser and Bowser Jr. from destroying the world as they know it. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. And speaking of working together, I absolutely LOVE how this movie shows Mario and Peach working together as a team. Mario gives Peach her pink parasol for her birthday, and that gift comes in handy for her several times when she's on her own, saving her butt and enhancing her abilities. And Mario himself even uses it later on when he and Peach are working their way through a minefield of Bowser Jr.'s booby traps. These two need each other and make each other better, a fantastic message, honestly. He and Peach are portrayed as partners, which is phenomenal to see in an age where women are girlbosses and men are incompetent wimps. And we even have a few moments where Bowser is questioning himself and his history as both a villain and a father, and what kind of messages he's been instilling in his son.The characters are as wonderful as ever, and as a longtime fan of "Yoshi's Island," I was tickled to death to see my sweet green dinosaur in this film, green speckled eggs and all! The references to the "Super Mario World" SNES games, as well as the original NES game, are amazing (fitting, given that this year is the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario franchise). And there's a post-credits surprise that makes me wonder if they're going to venture into Super Mario Land territory with the third film...Bottom line, don't listen to the negative reviews. You'll still be hooked on the Brothers after this!
