I’ll start with the production- though not necessarily a big fan of Max Martin and Shellback they do a magnificent job here (with one exception). Then there are the songs- killer melodies beautifully sung and sometimes ‘acted’ by Taylor with alternately witty, funny, cute, heartfelt but also dark, biting, ironic and brilliant lyrics. I can’t get “The Fate of Ophelia” out of my head. Insanely hook-y, lyrically dark but ultimately positive being that our protagonist is saved from Ophelia’s fate by her lover. The layers of Taylor’s voice on this song (and others) are wonderful. I like the darkness of the verse melodies contrasting with the lightness of the chorus- great touch. “Elizabeth Taylor” follows, with one of my favorite lines “I’d cry my eyes violet”, a subtle reference to Ms. Taylor. “Opalite” is another favorite- an upbeat number with an addictive, retro ‘oh, oh, oh, oh my lord’ in the chorus. “Father Figure” is obviously about her less-than-ideal relationship with her ex-manager, a pretty scathing take-down but I think he deserves it. Though credit is given to George Michael I can’t tell what his input is on this track other than its title. The lyrics here are so incisive- personal, raw and mature. “Eldest Daughter” is a beautiful ballad that affirms the singer is going to take a vow to “never gonna leave you now, now, now”, the last ‘now’ sung in a lower register that’s a sweet touch. The upbeat music to “Ruin The Friendship” belies the tragic story behind it. A song about missed opportunities and regret , I rarely don’t cry when I hear this. Taylor sings with a lovely yearning in her voice, touching my heart and making it another favorite. A dis track, “Actually Romantic” is a guilty pleasure. Taylor deftly turns her beef with Charlie XCX on its head with very humorous results and it happens to be pretty. Her line “No man could ever love me like you do” is perfect. For me “WI$H LI$T” is one of the weaker songs, the lyrics concerning consumerism versus love a bit trite. Then it gets worse. With its corny, faux-disco guitar riff kicking it off, instrumentally I was immediately turned off of “Wood”. Then the cute/cringe lyrics that sound like a teen could have penned them in their journal add to my annoyance with this song. I’m ecstatic about Taylor’s new love but this was the album’s nadir. Fortunately the slinky, dark “Cancelled” is next. “We’re the ones with matching scars” indeed, Ms. Swift. A sweet (and sour) piece that contrasts the ways men communicate with women, “Honey” has a lovely melody and smart, concise lyrics. “The Life Of A Showgirl” is stunning from its arrangement to her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, and the cautionary story it tells- a brilliant way to end the album. Taylor might have made a few misses here but on the whole she reigns.
