About This Product

A violent death and a vault of stolen treasures has Eve Dallas struggling to solve crimes old and new in the next thriller in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series."Narrator Susan Ericksen's performance vibrates with energy as she portrays old and new characters in this series." —AudioFile on Desperation in Death, an Earphones Award winner.A blow to the head with a block of amethyst has left multibillionaire Nathan Barrister dead—while nearby, a vault, its door ajar, sits filled with priceless paintings, jewelry, and other treasures. Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s husband, Roarke—who misspent his youth in Ireland as a scrappy thief—recognizes at least two stolen pieces among the hoard. The crime scene suggests a burglar caught in the act. But only one item seems to be missing. Then it’s revealed that the vault had actually belonged to the victim’s late father—and no one in the household knew it was there until a recent remodeling project exposed it. To protect the family name and business, they explain to Eve, they’d been looking for a way to return the ill-gotten gains anonymously and avoid the police. But now the police are all over their elegant house, and have a bigger, bloodier mystery to solve.By all accounts, Nathan Barrister was a good man, a generous employer, a devoted husband and father. As for his father—he clearly had secrets. Now it’s up to Eve and her team to find out if those secrets got Nathan killed—and if it was a crime of passion or revenge.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press

Customer Reviews Summary

Another wonderful story following Eve, Roarke, and the rest of the gang. It starts out with Eve and Roarke attending a charity event and Eve complaining silently to herself about being all dressed up. They actually got through the entire event until Eve's communicator goes off and she is sent to the scene of a possible homicide. It appears that Nathan Barrister, current head of Zip founded by his father Henry, interrupted a burglary and was killed so the thief could get away. However the items stolen were from a vault filled with stolen artifacts for the past 4 decades from museums, private collections, etc. After interviewing the wife and sister of the victim, Eve and Roarke go home to change out of the charity event fancy clothes. Roarke mentions to Eve that in his previous life as a thief, he stole a statue that was still in the vault as well as the Royal Suite, the emeralds that were stolen from the vault. Roarke assures Eve that nothing can be traced back to him but Eve also has to now be on the look out to make sure that Roarke is protected at all costs. Eve and her partner Peabody look at the life of everyone in the house, Nathan and his wife, including the 3 live in help and their 2 daughters. They also look into who could have told about the vault and it's contents, and look into the life of Nathan's father Henry. Things start to come together but surprises keep popping up all over the place. Who killed Nathan? Did this same person steal the Royal Suite? Is Roarke protected as much as he thinks? An absolute fantastic story, just like all the others in the series. Loved it!I did receive an ARC from NetGalley but this is my voluntary review.
