This show was a fond memory from my childhood, so I knew I had to get it. Was glad I did.The premise is pretty simple. Three teams of Hanna Barbera's characters compete against each other in crazy Olympic style games in order to win the Laff-a-Lympics Gold Medal at the end of the episode. The teams were the Scooby-Doobies (made up of the Mystery Solving / Adventure characters of the 70's like Scooby-Doo, Dynomutt, Captain Caveman, Speed Buggy, and Hong-Kong Phooey), the Yogi-Yahooeys (Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and other classic 60's Funny Animal characters) and the Really Rottens (a team of cheating "villain" characters like Mumbly, Dredd Baron, Daisy Mayhem and the Dirty Dalton Brothers). Each episode would take place in two different locations around the world with each contest tailored to those locations. This gave the show a lot of variety and fun.The show was inspired by a combination of the 60's cartoon "Wacky Races" and a live-action special series of the 70's called "Battle of the Network Stars". The three-team concept especially comes from the latter show. Also, since the show aired on the ABC Network, the cartoon commentators (Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf) wore yellow sports coats just like the commentators on ABC's Wild World of Sports. This made for a very relevant and recognizable format for kids of the 70's as well as providing a fun compilation of a lot of recognizable characters.A note on the opening title sequence: When this program originally aired, it was known as "Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics and was part of a long form program with repeat episodes of Scooby-Doo, Dynomutt and new episodes of Captain Caveman thrown in. So, the opening sequence focuses on all of those programs in addition to Laff-a-Lympics. Later, when the show went into syndication, a new sequence was made, and the show was just titled "Laff-a-Lympics". They kept the original Scooby opening sequence for every episode in this package even though the Scooby, Dynomutt and Captain Caveman shows are not part of the package. I would have preferred that they used the syndicated title sequence myself, but what they used is fine. You can find the syndicated version of the opening sequence on You-Tube.The package is good. All 24 episodes are clear, sharp and the sound is good too. English SDH subtitles are available. There is one Special Feature on the third disc. It's a 23-minute special from 2012 titled "Spooky Games" starring Scooby-Doo, Shaggy and the Gang. Shaggy, being a world-class runner, is drafted to run in the Olympics. Of course, there is the obligatory ghost coming to life and the Scooby-Gang has another mystery to solve. It's my understanding that this special was previously released on home video with excerpts from Laff-a-Lympics added to the package. This current package is reversed where Laff-a-Lympics is the forerunner and Spooky Games is the addition.There does seem to be one flaw in the package. When watching an episode, the pop-up menu will only allow you to switch on the subtitles or switch to another episode. You can't get to the Main Menu from the Pop-up. You'll have to use your main Disc menu button to get back to the Main Title menu (or wait until the episode plays out and takes you back to the Main Menu).All in all, it's a great program package. It's great for fans of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons and also a very family-friendly show for those of you looking for something for your kids. Can't go wrong here!
