"John Wick" has achieved a legendary status among action movie fans, but this was my first time watching it. It absolutely blew me away and I never wanted it to end.The short description is that it's about a guy who sets out for revenge against the man who kills his dog. The full story is much more complex.At the beginning of the movie, we meet John Wick (Keanu Reeves), a man grieving the loss of his wife to terminal illness. As he struggles to go on without her, he get a small dog as a posthumous gift from his wife to help him grieve.The moment when Wick gets the dog is some of the finest and most understated acting I've ever seen from Reeves.That's why it's more devastating when the disaster occurs. At a gas station, a gang of Russian thugs led by Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) try to buy his classic sports car. When Wick refuses, they break into his house at night, steal the car, and kill the dog.It's kind of a slow up until that point, but that's when the movie shifts into high gear and never stops. The Russians turn out to be mobsters who are all too familiar with John Wick, a retired assassin so good he even scares other assassins. Wick sets out to kill Iosef with ruthless determination.I love a good revenge movie, and "John Wick" is the best I've ever seen. Wick is a force of nature as he guns down, karate chops, and drives over countless thugs in his quest for justice.One of the best aspects of this movie is the glimpses of the shadowy underworld that Wick lives in. He stays in a secret hotel for assassins, hires special teams to get rid of dead bodies, and pays for it all with special gold coins. Wick knows everyone, and they all know and fear him. Even the police know better than to cross him.​In the end, "John Wick" is about more than just a guy running around killing. It's about Wick's quest for happiness and how his past has made it impossible to live a normal life. You feel like he's a tortured soul who just wants to find a closure that never comes.As a movie, "John Wick" is incredibly well made with action sequences in hotel rooms, night clubs, and on the streets of the city. The camerawork is great, the acting is powerful, fighting is always clear, and Wick's moves are always thrilling. Emotionally heart-wrenching and visually stunning, "John Wick" is simply a masterpiece.I never thought Reeves would ever find a role to match Neo in the Matrix series, but he was born to play John Wick. Looking forward to Chapter 2.
