A fantasy like you've never read before."―Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times bestselling authorEnter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away … because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Customer Reviews Summary
This book was such a ride!! I recommend it to everyone who likes adult fantasy romances. This world was unique and so captivating, I couldn't stop reading. To be frank, I was sold at: school for dragon riders. On top of that we get a mature story, in a cruel and heartbreaking world, with interesting characters and a story presented in a refreshing perspective. There were no over the top or fake drama, no mean girls bully type of characters for example, and the author was able to create diverse and complex characters that complemented the story really well. One of my favorite thing was the female main character, Violet. She is a mix of grumpy, empathic, hardworking, a bit dramatic (in a sarcastic, realistic, deadpan way). My favorite kind of FMC. Tough enough to defend herself and not let others use her or abuse her, but at the same time not hesitating to sacrifice herself to get things done. She'll protect others to her detriment, but not foolishly in a way that could make us angry at her. She is described many times as with an out of the norm intelligence, and it was clever by the author to not only bring that aspect as the FMC being "book smart" but also emotionnally intelligent, able to analyse situations before reacting and not being driven by her emotions only. She had common sense, which made her even more badass.Let's not forget the romance that was exquisite and scorching hot. A main male character that didn't want to control the FMC, and two characters that were able to communicate. In their own limit, but which prevented a lot of unecessary drama. There were surprises and twist that I didn't see coming and that were, I wanna say, refreshing in their unusualness. The emotions were there, I was fully connected to the characters and invested in the story. I'm still not over this book.Lastly, I have to mention the great humor. I laughed so many times during dialogues or due to the inner thoughts of the FMC.I had the best time and can't wait for book two.The book is told in 1st person and is single POV.
