This review is for anyone else with a herding dog that, like me, is thinking about DIY-ing a herding ball for their dog. First, I can comment generally on it as an exercise ball - it was easy (albeit time intensive and a good workout) to inflate using the provided hand/foot pump. It inflated in about 15 minutes of non-intensive pumping with breaks, and got quite firm. Very pleased with the quality, but I can't comment on durability with regular use. I'd like to buy another one to use as an exercise ball!For the dog folks - we then wrapped the entire ball in $20 of duct tape, to make it more rugged/durable, but that was laughably insufficient. Maybe if your dog will push it around without jumping on it or biting at it AT ALL, this would work. But (despite starting really slow and trying to teach her how to just boop it with her nose) our dog did both of those things and tore the duct tape immediately, then finally snagged a tooth in it after about 5 minutes and it died a very sad death. She did have SO much fun for those 5 minutes though, wow. Now, I haven't tried patching it yet... maybe that can extend the life of it. Maybe coating it entirely in silicone caulking or something would work better than duct tape. Or heavy duty fabric. That's how the name brand herding balls are sold - an inflated ball like this with a very tough fabric cover. Maybe we'll try DIYing that next.
