Hope and Fury is the new studio album by Grammy-winning artist Joe Jackson, written and recorded between Berlin and New York City. The album features nine new songs, performed with Jackson's longtime band - Graham Maby (bass), Teddy buddy (guitar), Doug Yowell (drums) - as well as Peruvian percussionist Paulo Stagnaro. Produced by Joe Jackson along with Patrick Dillett, Hope and Fury marks a return to what Jackson calls his "own mainstream": sophisticated pop songs that combine influences from rock, jazz, funk and Latin - or, as he describes it himself, "Bicoastal LatinJazzFunkRock." Musically, Hope and Fury evokes the atmosphere of Night and Day (1982), Laughter and Lust (1991), and Fool (2019). Like these albums, it sprays with strong melodies, clever lyrics and striking grooves - with Jackson's vocals and piano playing in captivating form.

If you’re a long-time follower of Joe Jackson and his regular musical diversions, this return in the usual four-piece band format will not disappoint. The opening track might take a few plays to get into but you’ll soon find that you have the whole album on repeat - thirty-five minutes of pure class. Clever lyrics and musical phrasing with JJ’s usual focus on the quality of the arrangements and the engineering of the recording - take a listen through decent headphones to really appreciate that.There are plenty of echoes from earlier recordings here, describing Pompey as ‘a tart of a town’ compared with New York’s ‘Hell of a town’ opening on Night and Day II. Fans of both artists may find enjoyable hints of Andy Partridge’s XTC in ‘The Face’ and ‘End of the Pier’ and Max Champion's persona returns in the closing track, ‘See you in September’.The album cover adds to the fun or those who know his home town – the current structure of Southsea’s South Parade Pier with mocked-up flames echoing the previous structure burned down in 1974 during the filming of Ken Russell’s ‘Tommy’.Highly recommended.
