Customer Reviews Summary
Morally corrupt characters are my jam, how about you? Even better, give me an ending that’s not a neat, tidy little bow.Petra Rose is a successful author, at least she was until her hit novel was adapted into a movie and she became the most hated woman on the planet. Who lets one of their main characters be written out? Petra did and now she’s been in hiding, unable to write, unable to face her fans, but she needs the money and to write. Is another love triangle the way to go? Particularly one with a married cop with a serious control issue? Does she know enough about either to write it properly? Do authors need to experience it to write it? When Detective Saint knocks on her door, with a crime occurring just outside her secluded cabin, she sees an opportunity to ask him all her questions. What presents as a philosophical question soon shows that Petra will indeed do whatever it takes. While this book was previously written as a short, I hadn’t read it at the time, so I went into this with fresh eyes. I have been a Hoover fan from the start and while I love her romance, particularly her new adult romance, her take on thrillers is one that I enjoy. They’re gritty, with characters that are often unlikable, who push the limits, but they’re also unique on the market and pull on the romance to really get readers hooked before the twists. Woman Down is just that, a gritty novel about a woman desperate for a muse.Petra is not entirely likable, as the novel goes on her morals are fully in question, but I couldn’t put down the book, desperate to know just how far this woman was willing to go. And just how dumb she could be. Hoover expertly takes readers into the psychological torment of an affair, of attention, and the ethics of research. It’s fast paced, predominately taking place in Petra’s secluded rental cabin, with the story quickly turning from research to fear, because soon she’s not really sure just who is pulling the strings.I enjoyed this novel, I think it’s an excellent psychological thriller, particular for fellow fans of Verity. Is Petra brave or truly reprehensible
