When a good reliable long time metal band is still delivering metal with its pounding thrash, Priest-style structures, although not a carbon copy by any stretch, the day for recognition is long overdue.The band started back in the early '80's, their self named debut a classic that did serious competition with all its contenders. Find me a better and heavier song than "Metal Church" and you'll be busy. They had their shares of tragedy, including the death of first vocalist David Wayne, shortly after his departure. Other various members came and went, with the constant presence of leader Kurdt Vanderhoof and for many great albums Mike Holt, who sadly died by his own hand a few years. Now, we have a fellow Brian Allen, a fine vocalist that does resemble David Wayne to a point.And Rick Van Zandt as guitarist? A relative of the Skynyrd tribe or just a shared last name? Don't matter. He is furious and he and Vanderhoof lock tighter than a pair of snakes in tights. Vanderhoof is unbelievably underrated, and these chopping guitars are as heavy and yet full of great riffs to make the music truly furious. And whoa- who is this familiar fellow on bass? Why, it's David Ellefson, and I am glad to see him give the band his always incredibly musical but ultra heavy and swinging (meaning riffs or hooks and not just buzzing root chord) best.And a little less known at the opposite end of the photo is the superb powerhouse from Flotsam & Jetsam, Ken Mary, who like the other transferees here are just the start of what could be an incredible future for this band.Songs hammer and occasionally offer a brief break, but titles are not as important as the album is non-stop brilliance with old classic real metal, better elements of thrash, which could and should have been in a few bands' place for the purposes of ranking. Is Anthrax listening to this?This outfit has worked with Metallica way early on, with then-guitarist John Marshall subbing for James Hetfield after Hetfield burned his arm in concert. They are common law metal brothers and so are Flotsam & Jetsam, not to mention Armored Saint. And Exodus is releasing their next assault soon. How about here in 2026 we recognize these guys for a new ranking, and not just four bands? "Dead to Rights" will be an album of the year.
