Sony WH-1000XM5 Are $248 — Last-Gen Flagships Still Make Sense in August 2026

Amazon has the Sony WH-1000XM5 at $248, down from $399.99. I have worn these for years. Here is when last-gen Sony still beats paying $398 for the XM6 — and when it does not.

I spent eight years as a software engineer in San Francisco before I started writing about this stuff for a living. The one pair that survived every commute on BART, every open-office sprint, and every red-eye to JFK was a Sony WH-1000XM set. The XM5 is last year's flagship. The XM6 is the current one. Today the honest question is not "which is newer." It is whether $248 for the XM5 is value over hype, or whether you should just pay $398 for the foldable XM6.

The price I could actually verify

Price-history trackers still had the Silver XM5 (ASIN B09XSDMT4F) at $248 on August 21, 2026, against a $399.99 list. SoundGuys clocked the same $248 cut on July 29. That is 38% off list. Prime Day in June put them at $198, so $248 is not the floor — it is the second-best number of the year, and it is the number sitting on Amazon as I write this on August 22.

The XM6 black listing (B0F3PQHWTZ) is still around $398 (list $459.99). I am not going to pretend a $150 gap is a rounding error.

If the buy box on the XM5 jumps back over $300, walk away. That is not a deal. That is last-gen at new-gen money.

What actually changed between XM5 and XM6

Sony will sell you a processor name. Skip it. Here is what I care about after years of wearing this family:

The hinge. The XM5 does not fold. The cups rotate flat and go into a tall case that eats a third of a backpack. That is the number-one complaint I still hear, and it is why Sony folded the XM6 again. If you live out of a 20L bag, the XM6 case is the upgrade. If you leave the headphones on a hook next to the desk, you will never notice.

ANC. Both use Sony's multi-mic setup and the Auto NC Optimizer. On a 737 and on Market Street, the XM5 already kills the drone. The XM6 is a refinement, not a new category. I will not invent a decibel chart I did not measure in a lab. Public reviews and my own commutes say the same thing: you will not hear a night-and-day gap unless you A/B them on a plane.

Codecs. XM5 still does LDAC, AAC, and SBC, plus a 3.5 mm analog cable in the box. That wired fallback matters on older inflight systems. Multipoint Bluetooth is here. DSEE Extreme is Sony's upscaler — leave it off until you have a reason.

Battery. Both quote up to 30 hours with ANC on. Quick charge is the feature you will actually use: a few minutes on USB-C covers a commute.

Comfort. The XM5 pads are the ones I can wear through a four-hour coding block. Clamp is lighter than Bose Ultra. Glasses wearers (I am one) do fine. No IP rating on either pair — these are not gym headphones, and Sony should stop letting people pretend they are.

Who should buy the $248 XM5

  • Android or mixed-device households that want app EQ, LDAC, and a headphone jack.
  • Anyone who already decided $400 for the XM6 is not happening this month.
  • Frequent flyers who care more about ANC than a foldable case.

Confirm you are looking at the WH-1000XM5, not a refurbished XM4 and not a full-price XM6. Sold by Amazon.com or Sony. Marketplace "new" at a miracle price is often open-box.

Who should skip it

  • You need a case that disappears in a backpack. Pay for the XM6 fold.
  • You live in Apple Spatial Audio and Find My. That is a different product (AirPods Max 2), and it is a different post.
  • You want earbuds. Over-ears are the wrong shape for a run.
  • You are hoping $248 is a secret $198. It is not. Set a price alert if the June Prime Day floor is your number.

Value over hype

The XM5 was a flagship. It still sounds like one. Sony's marketing on the XM6 is "new processor, more mics, folds." Two of those three matter. The processor name does not. At $248 you are buying 90% of the current Sony over-ear experience and skipping the tax on a hinge. That is the trade I would make for a second pair at the office.

I would not buy the XM5 at $350. I would not tell you the XM6 is a waste. I would tell you to look at the two ASINs, look at the two prices, and decide whether a folding case is worth $150 to you this week.

Silver XM5 price checked August 22, 2026 against price-history data from August 21 and the July 29 SoundGuys deal report. XM6 at $398 is the same figure we used in our ANC guide this morning. Confirm the seller and the live buy box before you tap buy.

Compare

I put the XM5 next to the current XM6 so you can see the fold and the price gap on one page, not in two tabs.

If the XM6 card is still near $398 and the XM5 is still near $248, that $150 is the hinge. If the gap shrinks under $80, I would just buy the new one.
