SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSD Is $35.60 Live β€” The Extreme Hits $41.50 for 4K V30, While Our Catalog Has Them Backwards

Live Amazon: SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSD is $35.60 (our card says $44.99). SanDisk Extreme 128GB is $41.50 (our card says $39.90). $5.90 more buys V30/U3 for 4K, A2, and a stated 90MB/s write. Neither works in Switch 2.

Verdict: The SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSD is $35.60 live on Amazon today. The SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSD is $41.50. That's $5.90 more for the card that's actually rated for 4K video (U3 and V30), loads apps faster (A2 instead of A1), and lists a 90MB/s write speed the Ultra page doesn't even mention. If the card is going in a camera, a drone, or an action cam, buy the Extreme. Our catalog has these flipped: the Ultra card still says $44.99 and the Extreme says $39.90, which makes the cheaper card look like the pricier one.

I cover consumer tech from San Francisco, and I checked both pages this morning with a San Francisco 94105 delivery address. I'm not posting my own speed benchmarks here. Every speed number below is SanDisk's own claim from the Amazon listing. The question is simple: is the Extreme's spec sheet worth six bucks over the Ultra at the same 128GB?

What it is

Both are 128GB SanDisk microSDXC UHS-I cards that come with a full-size SD adapter.

The SanDisk Ultra 128GB (B0B7NTY2S6) is the everyday card. The listing claims up to 140MB/s read, an A1 app rating, and Class 10 for Full HD video. It doesn't list a write speed. Live price $35.60. It ships from Amazon, but the seller is Direct Suppliers US, not Amazon itself. In stock, 4.7 stars from about 152,000 ratings, #5 in Micro SD Memory Cards, free delivery Monday, Oct 12 to San Francisco. Our card says $44.99, which is $9.39 too high.

The SanDisk Extreme 128GB (B09X7BK27V) is the camera card. The listing claims up to 190MB/s read (that needs a compatible reader, since it's faster than the normal UHS-I 104MB/s limit), up to 90MB/s write, U3 and V30 speed classes for 4K and 5K video, and an A2 app rating. Live price $41.50, which Amazon shows as 9% under a $45.60 typical price. It also ships from Amazon with a third-party seller, First Choice Online. In stock, 4.8 stars from about 149,500 ratings, #2 in Micro SD Memory Cards, free delivery Tuesday, Oct 13. Our card says $39.90, which is $1.60 too low.

Who it's for

Buy the Ultra at $35.60 if the card is going in an Android phone, a tablet, a Chromebook, a dashcam you don't record 4K on, or an original Nintendo Switch. That's photos, music, offline maps, and downloaded shows. The Ultra handles all of that fine, and you keep the $5.90.

Buy the Extreme at $41.50 if you shoot 4K video on a GoPro, a DJI drone, a mirrorless camera, or anything else that asks for V30. The Ultra's listing only promises Full HD, and a card that can't keep up with the bitrate is how you get dropped frames or a camera that stops recording. If you also offload big folders of footage to a laptop, the faster read (with the right reader) is a real time-saver.

Who should skip

Skip both if you own a Nintendo Switch 2. Both listings say in plain words that they work with the original Switch, not Switch 2, which needs a different type of card (microSD Express). Skip the Extreme if you just want more room for phone photos, because A2 and V30 won't change anything you notice there. Skip the Ultra if you already know your camera wants V30 or U3. Saving six dollars isn't worth a card your camera won't record to.

Honest nits

  • Neither one is sold by Amazon right now. Both ship from Amazon's warehouses, but the sellers are Direct Suppliers US (Ultra) and First Choice Online (Extreme). Check the seller name in the buy box before you check out, because it can change during the day.
  • These prices aren't the cheap microSD prices you remember. $35.60 is a lot for a 128GB Ultra. If you just want space, the SanDisk Ultra 256GB is $48.00 live, which works out to about $0.19 per GB compared with about $0.28 for the 128GB Ultra. The catch is that it's sold and shipped by a third-party seller (CA ELECTRONICX LLC) and doesn't arrive until Friday, Oct 16.
  • The 190MB/s and 140MB/s numbers need the right reader. Both are SanDisk's own internal-testing claims, and you only get them with a card reader that supports SanDisk's faster mode. A basic laptop SD slot will be slower. The Extreme's listing points to SanDisk's own PRO-READER, sold separately.
  • The Ultra page lists no write speed. For a camera, write speed is what matters, and the Extreme is the only one of the two that commits to a number (90MB/s).
  • I'm not inventing a benchmark. I didn't time file copies for this piece, so I'm only comparing what each listing promises and what each one costs today.

Value verdict

Buy the Ultra at $35.60 for phones, tablets, and the original Switch. Buy the Extreme at $41.50 for anything that records 4K. Ignore our catalog cards for now, because they have the price order backwards.

Is the Extreme worth $5.90 more? Yes, if a camera is involved. No, if the card is only there to hold photos and playlists.
