This is the device that does not ping you. 16GB holds a lot of books. Kindle Unlimited is a subscription I will not pretend is free.
Buy the Fire HD 8 at $74.99 if the job is video, a kid's case, recipes on a counter, or Alexa in the other room. Eight inches of HD is a better movie screen than a 6-inch e-ink panel that cannot play a movie. If you already have Prime Video as the default, this is the cheap second screen.
Who should skip
Skip the Kindle if you wanted color comics, PDFs of slide decks, or a web browser you will actually use. Skip it if the person receiving it is six and wanted Roblox. That is the Fire.
Skip the Fire HD 8 if you already own a recent iPad or a phone you are happy to read on, and you were hoping an $75 tablet would replace either. It will not. Skip it if Google Play is a requirement — the listing is explicit: Google Play is not supported. Skip our $429.22 Paperwhite card.
