Kasa HS103 Smart Plug 2-Pack Is $17.99 Live β€” The Matter KP125M Pair Hits $29.99 for Apple Home and Energy Data

Live San Francisco 94105: Kasa HS103P2 2-pack is $17.99 (~$9/plug; our card still says $23.99). Kasa Matter KP125M 2-pack is $29.99 ($15/plug) and adds Apple Home, local control, and energy monitoring. Alexa or Google homes should buy the HS103.

Verdict: The Kasa Smart Plug Mini HS103P2 2-pack is $17.99 live to San Francisco ZIP 94105, about $9.00 per plug. Our catalog still says $23.99, so that card is $6.00 high. The Kasa Matter Smart Plug KP125M 2-pack is $29.99 live, $15.00 per plug, and our card says $30.99. If your house runs on Alexa or Google, buy the HS103 pair. If you live in Apple Home, or you want to see what a space heater actually draws, the Matter pair is the one worth $12.00 more.

I cover tech from San Francisco. I did not put these on a power meter, and I am not going to invent wattage numbers. This is a spec-and-ecosystem call: what each listing says it does, what it costs today, and which kind of smart home it fits.

What it is

The HS103P2 is two Kasa Smart Plug Minis. Per the listing, you control them with the Kasa app or by voice through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, you can set timers and countdown schedules, and there is a physical button on the side of each plug. It needs 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, it is UL certified, and the newer version is rated 15A resistive at 120VAC. Live buy box today: $17.99, no strikethrough when I checked. Sold and shipped by Amazon.com, in stock.

The KP125M 2-pack is two Kasa plugs built on Matter. The listing names Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings, plus Siri for voice. Two features set it apart: energy monitoring that tracks usage over time, and Matter's local network control, which the listing says keeps the plugs working on your LAN when your home internet drops. It is rated 15A/1800W max, also 2.4GHz only, UL certified flame-retardant, with a stated 2-year limited warranty. Live: $29.99, Amazon.com sold and shipped, in stock.

Same brand, same basic job, same Wi-Fi band. The difference is which hub talks to the plug and whether the plug tells you anything back.

Who it's for

Buy the HS103P2 at $17.99 if you have an Echo or a Nest speaker and you want a lamp, a fan, or holiday lights on a schedule. At about nine dollars a plug, it is the cheap way to make a dumb outlet answer to your voice. Ignore our $23.99 card.

Buy the KP125M at $29.99 if you run an iPhone-first home and want the plug to show up in Apple Home without a workaround, or if you want energy data on something like a window AC, a dehumidifier, or a gaming PC. The local control is also worth something if your ISP drops out more than you'd like.

Who should skip

Skip the HS103 if Apple Home is your main app: the listing names Alexa and Google Assistant, not Apple Home, so you would be living in the Kasa app. Skip the KP125M if you just want a lamp on a timer, because you would be paying an extra $6 per plug for energy graphs you will never open. Skip both if your router is 5GHz-only or you have split the bands and do not want to set up a 2.4GHz network. And neither plug is a fix for a heavy appliance that already strains an outlet: check the rating against the device's label first.

Honest nits

  • Our catalog is stale on the cheap pair. HS103P2 card $23.99 vs live $17.99. KP125M card $30.99 vs live $29.99, which is close. I am quoting San Francisco ZIP 94105 buy boxes only.
  • Per-plug math. HS103P2 $17.99 / 2 β‰ˆ $9.00. KP125M $29.99 / 2 = $15.00. That gap is the cost of Matter and energy monitoring.
  • 2.4GHz on both. Neither listing supports 5GHz. Mesh systems that merge bands usually cope, but a setup that won't find the plug is the most common smart-plug headache.
  • No energy data on the HS103. Its listing promises on/off, schedules, and voice control. If you want to know what something costs to run, that is the KP125M's job.
  • Listing claims only. The LAN-when-offline behavior and the warranty are from the KP125M listing. I am not claiming a test I didn't run.

Tech verdict

Buy the HS103P2 at $17.99 for an Alexa or Google home that just needs outlets on schedules. Buy the KP125M at $29.99 for Apple Home, Matter, local control, or energy monitoring. Don't trust our $23.99 card, because that is not today's price.

Is the Matter pair worth $12.00 more? Only if you are an Apple Home household or you will actually read the energy numbers. Otherwise, the HS103 pair does the job for less.
