JBL Flip 7 Review: Buy the Tube for IP68 and Auracast, Not for 'AI Sound Boost'
JBL's Flip 7 is a $149.95 list Bluetooth tube that spent the summer bouncing between $100 and list. I care about the seal, the battery, and whether two of them will actually pair. The AI badge is noise.

I have owned more JBL tubes than is reasonable for one apartment. The Flip is the size I actually take to a park. The Flip 7 is the 2025 refresh: IP68, USB-C lossless, Auracast, a PushLock loop, and a badge that says AI Sound Boost. That last one is the reason I wrote this. I wanted to say out loud that you should not pay extra for a marketing phrase that means "the DSP turns itself up."
The price I will and will not print
List is $149.95. SoundGuys had Amazon at $99.95 on July 23. Gizmodo had colors at $100 on July 1. Best Buy's tracker was back at $149.95 in early August after sitting at $99.95 in late June and mid-July. Walmart has been showing $99.95 on some colors as a "was $149.95" tile.
I am not going to tell you the Flip 7 is $99.95 today, because I have not watched that buy box this hour and this speaker yo-yos. I will tell you the two numbers that matter: $149.95 is full price. $99–$110 is the sale I would click. If Amazon is at list, wait. This thing goes on sale the way printer ink goes on sale.

What actually matters on a $100–$150 tube
Seal. IP68 is the upgrade I wanted. Dust and a dunk, not just a splash. The Flip 6 was already a pool speaker. The 7 is the one I would set on a wet teak table without performing a risk assessment. Drop-proof from about a meter is JBL's claim. I will not invent a drop test I did not film.
Battery. JBL quotes 14 hours, 16 with Playtime Boost. Boost is a quieter limiter. If you run it at party volume, plan on an afternoon, not a weekend. USB-C charge. USB-C can also take a digital audio input — that is the "lossless" line in the spec. Useful on a laptop. Irrelevant on a phone over Bluetooth.
Bluetooth and Auracast. Pairing two Flips used to mean JBL's party app and a prayer. Auracast is the cleaner broadcast if the second speaker speaks it. I still do the pair-and-walk-away test: if they desync in the kitchen, they are a single speaker that happens to have a sibling in the box.
AI Sound Boost. This is a dynamic EQ / loudness contour. It makes the 7 sound bigger at low volume and keeps it from collapsing at high volume. It is not a new driver. It is not a reason to skip a $100 Flip 6 if you already own one. Value over hype: buy the 7 for the seal and the clip, not for the neural-net sticker.
PushLock. The interchangeable loop/carabiner is the first Flip accessory system that does not feel like a keychain afterthought. If you hang speakers on a backpack, this is the reason to pick 7 over a used 6.
Sound, without a fake frequency graph
It is a 3-inch-class tube. Bass is the JBL thump you expect. Mids get shouty past 70%. Vocals are fine for a playlist, not for a movie night. Outdoors it wins on "people in the other circle can hear the chorus." Indoors I would rather have a SoundLink Flex or a Sonos if I already live in that app.
I did not run this through REW. I ran it through the same Saturday playlist I use on every portable: one vocal-heavy track, one bass-heavy track, one podcast. The 7 does the first two the way JBL always has. The podcast is clearer than the Flip 5 I retired. That is the review.
Who should buy it
- You want a speaker you can rinse off.
- You will wait for $99–$110.
- You might Auracast a second JBL later.
Who should skip it
- You already own a Flip 6 and it is not broken. The 7 is not a new category.
- You want stereo imaging. Buy two and accept the setup, or buy a real stereo speaker.
- You need 20+ hours at party volume. That number does not exist in this tube.
Value over hype
JBL will sell you AI. I will sell you an IP68 bottle that has a documented summer floor of $99.95. At list, it is a $150 Bluetooth speaker in a world full of $150 Bluetooth speakers. On sale, it is the default picnic tube I would put in a cart.
I do not need a new Flip every year. I need one that survives August in the Mission and still pairs on the first try. The 7 does that. The badge does not add a driver.
