iPhone Air 256GB Is $840 — Buy It for the Weight, Not the Camera

Apple's thinnest iPhone is $159 off at $840. A19 Pro and a 6.5-inch 120 Hz panel are real. The single 48MP camera and thinner battery are the nits I will not bury.

Verdict: iPhone Air 256GB at $840 (list $999) is the first time I would tell a normal iPhone buyer to consider Apple's thinnest phone. Skip it if you want a zoom lens or you hate charging in the afternoon.

Price I verified: 9to5Toys' August 21, 2026 weekend roundup listed iPhone Air 256GB at $840 (reg $999), 512GB at $1,040 (reg $1,199), and 1TB at $1,240. Open-box 256GB Space Black was $798. ASIN B0FQH22MBY is unlocked Space Black 256GB.

I held this phone in a review unit weeks after launch and the first sentence is always the same: 5.6 mm and 165 g is a party trick that still works. Titanium frame. Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, Ceramic Shield on the back. 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR, ProMotion 120 Hz, 3000 nits peak, always-on. A19 Pro — the same class of chip as 17 Pro — and 12 GB of RAM. USB-C. Wi-Fi 7. eSIM only in the US.

The camera is the compromise Apple does not put on the billboard. One 48MP Fusion camera with a 2x crop. No Ultra Wide. No tetraprism. The 18MP Center Stage front camera is excellent for video calls and Dual Capture. If you shoot real estate, kids' sports, or anything that needs 0.5x, this is the wrong iPhone. Buy 17 Pro.

Battery is the other compromise

Apple quotes up to 27 hours of video playback. That is a lab playback number, not my commute. In mixed use the Air is thinner than 17 / 17 Pro and the battery is the thing you feel. I treat it like a phone that wants a USB-C cable at the desk, not a 17 Pro Max you forget to plug in. If you are the person who ends the day at 15% on a 17, you will end the day lower here. I will not invent a "11 hours 42 minutes" screen-on figure I did not log this week.

Who this is for

  • You want a big 6.5-inch 120 Hz panel without Pro Max bulk
  • You live on iMessage, Maps, Safari, and a single good camera
  • You already own MagSafe and a 30W-class charger
  • $840 vs $999 is the difference between "maybe" and "yes"

Who should skip

Photographers. Hotspot-heavy travelers. Anyone who wants a physical SIM in 2026 (US models are eSIM-only). People who charge once every two days. And anyone staring at a 17 Pro listing thinking the Air is "basically Pro." It is not. It is a Pro chip in a fashion-thin body with a one-camera brain.

Unlocked new 17 Pro still sits at $1,099 for 256GB at Apple and Best Buy. Renewed Premium 17 Pro is a different post. Air at $840 undercuts both on price and weight. That is the pitch. The nit is the camera and the cell.

Confirm seller and condition. I want Sold by Amazon or Apple, new, unlocked. Carrier-locked "renewed" Air units are a different ASIN family — I linked the unlocked 256GB Space Black on purpose.
