iPhone 18 Pro's Main Camera Gets a Moving Iris — Recaps Don't Agree Which Model Gets It
9to5Mac reported actuator production in April. This week's recaps still call it a first for iPhone — and they still disagree whether the smaller Pro gets the iris, or only the Max. Today's 17 Pro is still f/1.78, fixed.

What I actually believe today (August 26, 2026): the leftover camera beat is a moving iris, not another Portrait-mode software trick. Recaps this week still say Apple will put a mechanical aperture on the 48-megapixel Fusion camera so the opening can change. They do not agree whether both Pro models get it, or only the Max. That is the unused beat I parked on yesterday's Dynamic Island page. This page is that iris, not another cutout recap.
I am not treating Ice Universe as a spec sheet. I am not inventing an f-stop range. None of the 2026 recaps I am using print a min/max for the 18 Pro. The number I will print is the current one: the 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro main cameras sit at a fixed ƒ/1.78, per MacRumors.
##### What the current recaps actually say
9to5Mac, April 16 (Ben Lovejoy): China's Sunny Optical started manufacturing actuators for a variable-aperture camera. They quote ET News that LG Innotech would start assembling camera modules around June to July. 9to5Mac's own take is the useful one: enough cumulative evidence this is the year, and do not expect DSLR bokeh, because the sensor is still small.
MacRumors, August 17 (Tim Hardwick): Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station says the main Fusion camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models gets variable aperture — a first for iPhone. Ming-Chi Kuo said the same in November 2024. That is the both-models camp.
MacRumors, August 20 (Tim Hardwick): Ice Universe poured cold water on that. Only the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets the iris, "for the best camera experience." Hardwick's line is that buyers of the smaller 18 Pro could miss out. That is a Weibo leaker, not Gurman. I will not put "Max only" on a buy button.
MacRumors, August 23 (Joe Rossignol): the 12-feature recap hedges. Variable aperture on "at least one" iPhone 18 Pro model. Rossignol also says it is unclear how meaningful the change is on a phone-sized sensor. That hedge is why this page exists instead of a spec graphic.
9to5Mac, August 17 still writes both Pro models, and keeps Ben Lovejoy's depth-of-field explanation: shallow to isolate a person, medium so the background is still a place, deep for a cityscape. CNET's iPhone 18 roundup has the same split I am using: Ice Universe exclusive to the Max, The Information on a mechanical iris on at least one rear camera of the 18 Pro, and a reminder that Galaxy S9 and Xiaomi already tried this. AppleInsider's August 7 Pro roundup has been on the April 2026 actuator production for weeks.
##### What I am not writing today
Yesterday was Gurman on a smaller Dynamic Island that does not vanish. That page is done. A20 on 2nm, Dark Cherry, and the C2 modem are still in the rumor pile. They are not this page. I already used the split-launch calendar, camera AirPods in 2027, the spec graphic, and fold testers with no telephoto.
##### My note, not a leak
I still see people at Dolores sliding the Portrait blur after they already took the photo. A moving iris is the first camera rumor this cycle that would change how I take the shot, not how I edit it. A smaller Pro without that iris is a different product than a Max with it. The recaps have not settled which one Apple is shipping.
If you want today's Fusion camera, the phone that exists is the iPhone 17 Pro — Renewed 256GB Deep Blue on that card, still a fixed ƒ/1.78. If you already live with one rear camera, iPhone Air is the live slab. I am not quoting our catalog dollars on either card. One of those prices has been wrong before. Open the listing.
I would not wait for a September invite to find out if the smaller Pro got the iris. I would not skip a phone you need this month because a leaker drew a line between Pro and Pro Max.
