iPad Air M3 Is $465 — The A16 iPad at $276 Is the Value Pick Today

Our catalog has the 11-inch M3 iPad Air 128GB at $464.55 and the 11-inch A16 iPad 128GB at $275.62. That is about $189 to step up. I would keep the $189 unless the iPad is actually your computer.

Verdict: The Apple iPad Air 11-inch M3, 128GB is a better tablet. The Apple iPad 11-inch A16, 128GB is the one I would actually buy today. Our catalog has the Air at $464.55 and the A16 iPad at $275.62 on August 23, 2026. That is about $189 to step up. Most people should keep the $189.
I cover consumer tech from San Francisco. The last decade trained me to ignore launch-week adjectives. Apple Intelligence, "M3 in a tablet," "pro workflows" — all real phrases, all used to sell a chip you will not feel in Safari. I am not running Geekbench on these. I have not posted a synthetic score in a review in years, because a screenshot of a benchmark is not a use case.
What it is
Two 11-inch Apple tablets, both 128GB Wi-Fi, both Liquid Retina, both 12MP front and back cameras, both Touch ID, both with Apple's usual all-day battery claim. I am not inventing an 11-hour screen-on log. "All-day" here means I can take either one to a café, a flight, and a meeting without packing a brick. That is the job.
The M3 Air is the thin, laminated, laptop-adjacent slab. Space Gray on this ASIN. M3 is a Mac chip. It is the one that will keep up with Stage Manager, heavier Procreate canvases, and whatever Apple Intelligence features iPadOS is actually shipping this week. USB-C, Wi-Fi 6E, Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard as the accessory tax.
The A16 iPad is the standard 11-inch iPad. Silver on this ASIN. A16 is recent iPhone silicon, not a toy. It will play video, take notes, run Zoom, and handle Lightroom in a pinch. Accessories are cheaper: USB-C Pencil, not Pencil Pro; a folio, not a $300 keyboard. Wi-Fi 6, not 6E. You will not notice 6E on a home router.
Who it's for
Buy the A16 iPad at $276 if this is a media slab, a kid tablet with a case, a recipe screen, a travel reader, or a second screen you will lose under a couch. That is most iPads I see in the wild in this city. $276 for 11 inches and 128GB is the honest number in our catalog today.
Buy the M3 Air at $465 if the iPad is the computer. Illustration, longer writing sessions with a keyboard, split-screen research, Apple Intelligence features you already use on a Mac or iPhone. The M3 is the chip that will still feel current two iPadOS cycles from now. That is the only premium I will defend.
Who should skip
Skip the Air if you were going to "grow into" M3. You will not. Skip it if the $189 is going to make you cheap out on a case. Skip it if you actually need a laptop — I have already written about iPad Pro money versus a MacBook Air on this site. An Air tablet is not a laptop with the keyboard missing.
Skip the A16 iPad only if you already know you need Pencil Pro, a Magic Keyboard, or a chip that is not a phone SoC. Do not skip it because a product page said "Apple Intelligence."
Honest nits
- 128GB fills up. 128GB on either tablet is tight once Photos and a few 4K clips land. I would rather have 128GB at $276 than pay $189 for a faster chip and the same storage ceiling.
- Accessory math. Magic Keyboard plus Pencil Pro can swallow the $189 gap and then some. Suddenly you own a $700+ tablet that still is not a MacBook.
- Display. The Air's lamination and coating feel nicer in the hand. That is a real difference. It is not a $189 difference for Netflix.
- I will not fake benches. M3 is faster than A16. You feel it in layered creative apps and stubborn multitasking. You do not feel it in YouTube, Kindle, or Notes.
If you already own a recent iPad, this is not an upgrade cycle. If you do not own one, start at $275.62. Open Amazon, confirm Sold by Amazon, confirm 128GB Wi-Fi, and buy the A16. Step up to M3 only with a specific app in mind, not a vibe.
