Galaxy Watch 8 vs Apple Watch Series 11: Same $300, Different Phone Tax

Series 11 is $299 this week for iPhone owners. Galaxy Watch 8 is the Wear OS watch I would buy near $299. Crossing ecosystems is how you waste the money.

Verdict: If you have an iPhone, buy Apple Watch Series 11 at $299. If you have a Galaxy, Galaxy Watch 8 40mm is the Android watch I would actually wear — when it is near $299, not $350 list. Crossing ecosystems is how people waste $300.

Prices: Series 11 42mm GPS $299 (list $399) this week — MacRumors August 20, 9to5Toys August 21. Galaxy Watch 8 40mm list is $349.99 (Samsung). Price-history trackers had the Graphite 40mm Bluetooth (ASIN B0F7QD4HSD) around $299 recently, with a Prime Day print as low as $218. I am not claiming a same-hour Amazon tag. Open the listing.

I have worn Wear OS and watchOS back to back for years. The software is the product. Hardware is a case around notifications, a heart-rate sensor, and a battery you will complain about.

Series 11 (watchOS)

Always-on, ECG, sleep, crash detection, double-tap, a thousand bands. It is a satellite of your iPhone. That is a feature if you are in iMessage and Wallet. It is a bug if you own a Pixel or a Galaxy and you like Google's tiles. $299 for 42mm GPS is the cheapest I will tell an iPhone owner to go without dropping to a used SE.

Galaxy Watch 8 (Wear OS)

40 mm cushion case, about 30 g, Super AMOLED, ECG, body composition (BIA), sleep coaching, running coach, Energy Score. Samsung's 2025 Watch 8 is the daily driver; Watch Ultra is the $650 titanium / 10 ATM / depth-gauge machine I only recommend if you actually swim open water. Watch 8 Classic exists if you want a rotating bezel and you will pay for it.

The Watch 8 health stack is more "coach-y" than Apple's out of the box. Samsung will nag you about energy and sleep with a straight face. Apple will show rings and let you ignore them. I prefer Apple's restraint. A lot of Android users prefer the nag. Neither is a medical device you should diagnose from.

Battery and nits

Apple: all-day, charge at night. Samsung 8: Samsung quotes around 40 hours typical; Ultra is the multi-day one. In the real world I treat Watch 8 like a 1.5-day watch if you disable always-on, and a one-day watch if you do not. I am not posting a fake 37-hour lab table.

Other nits: Watch 8's 40 mm is the one I would buy. 44 mm exists if you want a bigger face. Bluetooth vs LTE — same lecture as Apple. LTE is for runs without a phone. The Galaxy app tax is real; you will install Wear and Samsung's health extras. On iPhone, Galaxy Watch is a worse experience. On Galaxy phones, Apple Watch is not an experience at all.

How I would spend $300

Value over hype is the whole category. A $299 watch that you wear is better than a $650 watch that lives in a charging puck.
