Camera AirPods Aren't a September Product — Gurman Says 2027

macOS 26.7 leaked a Visual Intelligence demo and dual still cameras. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the buds stay 2027. Buy AirPods Pro 3 now.

What I actually believe today (August 23, 2026): the camera AirPods in that macOS leak are a real prototype. They are not a September product. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said 2027 after the video dropped. I would not sit out a year of noise canceling for earbuds that cannot save a photo.
Yesterday I wrote the iPhone 18 split-launch calendar. I said this leak deserved its own page. Here it is.
The leak Apple left in the installer
MacRumors on August 17 found a demo video inside the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. A man holds up a book. The voiceover says: "With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later." There is also a warning if hair covers the buds.
CNET the same week recapped that clip. The software codename in the build is B790.
That is not a mockup from a Weibo account. It is Apple's own installer.
What the code actually says
MacRumors on August 21 (Tim Hardwick, via forum member mactracker) pulled a hidden AccessorySensorManager framework out of the same macOS build. The claims I am willing to repeat, because they are in that write-up:
- Left and right buds capture synced RGB stills, not video.
- Active mode (you ask Siri) samples around 640x640 and returns a processed 1024x1024 frame. That is about one megapixel of output, not a 48MP camera.
- Passive mode is lower: 320x320 capture, 320 or 512 output, for background context.
- The framework mentions on-device person detection, head-motion rejection, and a hardware indicator light.
MacRumors is clear this is likely the canceled B790 prototype, not a guarantee of the shipping product. I am not turning those pixel counts into a lab test. They are code comments from a build Apple did not mean to ship.
Gurman, after the video
On August 19, 9to5Mac quoting Bloomberg reported Gurman's update: the camera AirPods "remain on track for 2027" even though the leak made a September debut look possible.
The split he describes:
- B790 — a modified AirPods Pro 3 with cameras. That is the pair in the video. Gurman says Apple no longer plans to sell it.
- B798 — a new generation with cameras. That is the 2027 plan. MacRumors says it could land next to the 20th-anniversary iPhone.
AppleInsider on August 19 has the same read: the Pro 3 camera variant is shelved; a later Pro with cameras is still in development. Gurman's line, via 9to5Mac: the sensors are meant to "scan the surrounding environment and provide context to the Siri digital assistant and other AI tools." Not Photos. Not Recents. Not a hidden camcorder.
I am not inventing a price, a battery number, or a shipping month inside 2027. Apple has not announced this product.
My note, not a leak
I wear AirPods Pro 3 on the N-Judah and on walks around the Mission. A low-res sensor in the stem that cannot save a picture is a 2027 science project. Privacy people already nicknamed the idea "pervertpods." Apple's answer, if Gurman is right, is a status light plus stills that never land in your Camera Roll. That may be enough. It is still not a reason to skip the buds that exist.
If you want ANC, heart-rate, and Live Translation this week, buy AirPods Pro 3. Our catalog has them at $169.09. If you want open-fit and you do not need ANC, AirPods 4 is the other live pair I can attach.
I am not waiting for a September invite that does not include these. Fall is still iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the foldable. These camera buds are the other pile.
