Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) Review: The Pocket Speaker That Beats a Tube on Voice
Bose's SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen is the small IP67 brick I take when a Flip is too much speaker. List sits in the $150s. Summer sales have seen $99–$119. Here is what PositionIQ actually does.

I keep two portable speakers in the hall closet: a JBL tube for when other people are coming over, and a Bose brick for when I am the other people. The SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) is that brick. It is smaller than a Flip 7, silicone-wrapped, IP67, and it has a utility loop I actually use on a tote. Bose will talk about "big, bold sound." I will talk about mids, Orientation, and whether $99 is still on the board.
The price, without a fake "right now"
Sandstone US ASIN: B0D6W8GSL3. 9to5Toys on July 10 had Limited Edition Sunset Peach and Fog Gray at $99 (they called out a $159-ish regular). Other colors were $119 the same day. Mashable's Prime Day roundup had the Flex 2nd Gen at $99. A March deal write-up had it at $129.
I am not printing a same-hour Amazon number I did not reload. I am printing the pattern: full price lives in the $150s. The sale I click is $99–$119. If your color is $159, buy a different color or wait. Bose discounts by color, not by generation.

PositionIQ is the one Bose phrase I will defend
The Flex has a sensor for orientation. Lay it down, stand it up, hang it from the loop. The DSP changes the voicing so you do not get a muffled top end when the grille is aimed at a towel. That is not "AI." That is an accelerometer and a filter. It is why I prefer this brick to a cheap tube that only sounds right in one position.
IP67 is dust-tight and a dunk. It floats. The silicone wrap is why I stop worrying about a bike-basket rattle. USB-C charging. Bluetooth 5.3. Bose app for a simple EQ and to pair two Flexes in stereo. Pairing two is the feature people forget they paid for — do it once in the living room before you take them to a patio.
Battery and volume — manufacturer claims, not my lab
Bose quotes up to 12 hours at "typical" listening and about 3 hours at max. That tracks with every Flex I have run down on a ferry. If you need all-day party volume, this is the wrong product. If you need a speaker that lasts a hike plus a dinner, 12 hours at sane volume is the number.
There is no Wi-Fi. There is no AirPlay. There is no voice assistant worth enabling. It is a Bluetooth speaker. That is a feature. I do not want a $20-a-year cloud around a picnic.
Sound: why I pick this over a Flip for one person
The Flip 7 wins the "people heard it from the next blanket" contest. The Flex wins voices. Podcasts, acoustic guitar, the midrange in a live-session playlist — this is the Bose house sound, which means it will not punch you in the chest and it will not disappear a vocal under a kick drum.
I have not published a frequency plot. I have sat both speakers on the same table and played the same track. If you eat a lot of playlists with lyrics, the Flex is the one I would leave on the kitchen shelf. If you eat a lot of playlists with 808s, the Flip is the one I would take downstairs.
Who should buy it
- One or two people, not a backyard.
- You want something that survives a bag and a wet table.
- You can land a color at $99–$119.
Who should skip it
- You need Wi-Fi whole-home audio. That is a Sonos Era 100.
- You need the loudest $100 tube. That is the Flip 7 on sale.
- You already own a 1st Gen Flex and it is fine. 2nd Gen is Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, and a voicing tweak — not a new category.
Value over hype
Bose will sell you "hi-fi in a pocket." I will sell you a midrange-first brick with a real orientation sensor and a documented summer floor of $99. At $159 I would browse JBL. At $99 I would stop browsing.
I used to overbuy speakers because the spec card said watts. Watts on a battery brick are a suggestion. What matters is whether the voice sits in front of the bass when you hang the thing off a chair. The Flex does that. That is the review.
