Apple Watch Ultra 3 Review: The Right Watch If You Need It — The Wrong $800 Upsell If You Don't

Ultra 3 is titanium, multi-day battery, and dual-frequency GPS. Series 11 is $299 this week. I wore both. Here is the honest split — no invented GPS charts.

Verdict: Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the watch I recommend to trail runners, divers, and people who hate charging. It is not the watch I recommend to everyone with $800. Most iPhone owners should buy the Series 11 at $299 and keep the extra money.
Prices I actually saw: 9to5Toys had Natural/Black Ultra 3 + Milanese Loop at $799.99 (list $899) on August 14, 2026. Ocean Band configs were $699.99 (list $799) on August 12; that cut had already vanished by the 14th. I am not going to pretend I refreshed the buy-box this hour. If Amazon is back at $799–$899, treat this as a review, not a "buy in the next 20 minutes" post.
Ultra 3 is 49 mm of titanium, a bigger battery, dual-frequency GPS, 100 m water resistance, a siren, and satellite emergency messaging. ASIN B0FQFHVZYL is the current Amazon listing for the 49mm GPS + Cellular multisport model. Cellular is not optional on Ultra. You pay for the radio whether you activate it or not.
I have worn Ultras on weekend loops in the Marin Headlands and on normal office weeks in the city. The Action Button is the feature that is not marketing. Custom workouts, a drop-pin, a flashlight, a dive app — one physical control you can hit with gloves. Series 11 does not have that. If you never leave paved roads, you will never miss it.
Battery is the real spec
Apple rates Ultra in the multi-day range with typical use and much longer in low-power. Series 11 is an all-day watch. That gap is why Ultra exists. I still charge Ultra twice a week when I use always-on plus GPS workouts. That is not a lab chart. That is a habit. If you want a watch you forget to plug in, Ultra is the Apple answer. If you already charge a phone on a nightstand, Series 11 is enough.
Where Ultra is the wrong upsell
- You want a thin, light office watch. Ultra is 49 mm and looks like a dive computer. That is the point. It is also why it looks silly under a dress-shirt cuff.
- You will not enable cellular. You are paying for a modem.
- You think Milanese Loop is "included value." The $899 Milanese SKU is a $100 band tax on top of a $799 watch. Buy the Ocean or Trail config when it is $700 and add a band later.
Display is gorgeous. It is also a 49 mm rectangle that will bang door frames. The titanium shrugs off that. Your door frame will not.
How I would buy it
Wait for Ocean Band at $700 if you can. Pay $800 for Milanese only if you already wanted that band. Do not pay $899 list in August unless you need it before a trip tomorrow. And please compare it to Series 11 at $299 before you congratulate yourself for "investing in health." The sensors that matter for most people — HR, ECG, sleep, crash detection — are on both.
I am not publishing fake VO2 or GPS-error charts. Dual-frequency GPS is better under trees. You will notice it on switchbacks. You will not notice it on a treadmill.
