Amazon Basics 1/2-Inch Yoga Mat Is $22.48 — The Retrospec at $36.02 Is the Same Half-Inch

Our catalog has the Amazon Basics extra-thick mat at $22.48 and the Retrospec Solana at $36.02 (ignore $42.99). Both are 1/2 inch, about 72–74 by 24. I would keep the $13.54.

Verdict: The Amazon Basics extra-thick yoga mat is the half-inch I would leave by the door. The Retrospec Solana is also a half-inch, in Wild Spruce, with a nylon strap. Our catalog today, August 26, 2026, has the Amazon Basics at $22.48 and the Solana at $36.02 (ignore the $42.99 list). That is $13.54 for a color and a brand. I would keep the thirteen dollars.
I cover sports and outdoors from Denver. I am not posting a durometer reading or a sweat-absorption graph. I am asking whether a second 1/2-inch foam rectangle is worth fourteen bucks when the house-brand one is already 74 by 24 by 0.5.
What it is
The Amazon Basics YM2001 is black NBR foam, extra thick, 74 x 24 x 0.5 inches on the feature list (the spec line says 73.2 x 24.3 x 0.5). Textured surface, elastic strap, wipes clean. About a kilogram. 4.6 from the review blob, tens of thousands of ratings, #1 in yoga mats. In stock. Ships from Amazon. This is the mat that lives in a closet and comes out for a 20-minute stretch after a run, not a $120 studio status object.
The Retrospec Solana is 72 x 24 x 1/2 inch, Wild Spruce on this ASIN, nylon strap, BPA-free pitch, easy-clean with soap and water, do not submerge. About 1.18 kg. 4.4 from a few thousand ratings. In stock. The description mentions high-density TPE; the spec line just says foam. I am not going to pick a material fight from a paragraph. Both are thick floor mats. Both will off-gas a bit when you unroll them. Retrospec says to air it a day or two. That is honest. I have opened enough NBR in a small apartment to believe it.
We also have a CAP Barbell 1/2-inch card at $54.49 that is 68 x 24 — shorter, more money. I am not using that as the rival. That is the skip.
Who it's for
Buy the Amazon Basics at $22.48 if this is a home mat, a gym bag mat, or the thing you throw in the car for a park stretch. Half-inch is the whole feature. Knees, hips, wrists on a Denver basement floor. Black hides the dirt. The strap is elastic, not a fashion sling. #1 in the category on this card is not a personality. It is what people actually order.
Buy the Solana at $36.02 if you wanted Wild Spruce instead of black, or you already trust Retrospec from a bike or a paddle. 72 inches vs about 74 is two inches I will not pretend I feel in a forward fold. The $42.99 list is the usual crossed-out number. $36.02 is still $13.54 more than the Basics.
Who should skip
Skip the Solana if the extra $13.54 is going to make you skip a mat entirely. Skip it if you needed a travel 1/8-inch you can fold into a tote. Half-inch does not fold into a tote. Skip our CAP card at $54.49 unless you like paying more for a shorter mat.
Skip the Amazon Basics if you wanted a color that is not black, or if NBR smell in a small room is a deal-breaker and you already know you prefer the other foam. Skip both if you already own a mat that still lies flat.
Honest nits
- Both are 1/2 inch. The premium is not thickness. Do not buy the Solana for "more cushion" off these cards. The listings agree.
- Length. Basics ~74". Solana 72". CAP 68". If you are tall and you use the whole mat, start at the longer cheap one.
- I will not fake a grip test. Textured NBR vs "non-slip" Solana is a sweaty-palm question you will answer on day two, not from a product photo.
- Manduka. We have a Manduka PRO card in this catalog with a nonsense $433 price. I am not comparing against that number. If you wanted a lifetime studio mat, that is a different purchase at a live Manduka price, not a glitch.
Value verdict
Buy the Amazon Basics if you wanted a half-inch to use. Buy the Solana if you wanted that color and you already like the brand. Buy neither if a towel on carpet is still doing the job.
Worth the extra $13.54 over Basics? No, not for the same half-inch.
