Customer Reviews Summary

The latest release from M.W. Craven’s pen is this: The Final Vow; a Washington Poe & Matilda - Tilly - Bradshaw thriller - and thriller it is! If you have read Mr. Craven’s previous books; and are a fan (As I have and am!) then you won’t need much incentivising to read this; or, at the very least, to add it to your TBR list. I really enjoyed it and read it in two sittings: pure escapism; a sort of thrill a minute thriller which stretches realities’ credibility; or does it? Whichever way you read it; it is great, and very enjoyable, read - as are all Craven’s novels; especially those featuring Washington Poe & Tilly Bradshaw!M.W Craven’s earliest characters were Alison Fluke as in - for instance - Born in a Burial Gown; he was followed by Poe & Tilly and later by Ben Koenig in two novels to date; but, Poe & Tilly are the preeminent characters; and this ‘The Final Vow’ is their 7th outing; plus a coupe of short stories.Whereas Poe is fundamentally a cop; a sergeant and an all round good guy who is now engaged to Estelle - now Lady Estelle Doyle - the brilliant pathologist who featured in previous novels - it is Tilly who is the real attention getter: Matilda who is intellectually brilliant and attended Oxford at 13 years old. But, in spite of her brilliance she is oblivious to what we refer to as the ‘social norms’! She is self deprecating in an unconscious and unintentional way; and is forever ‘putting her foot in it’ as one might say: On offering condolences to a bereaved father instead of ‘my deepest condolences…’ she’ll say: ‘… life goes on…’ She is incapable of being embarrassed. But when it comes to facts and figures statistics & computers et al - as the song says: ‘Nobody does it better’ . . .The novel is about a serial sniper who, at the outset, has killed/murdered 17 innocents with 100% ‘success’ rate: he never misses every shot is a hit! He must be stopped; but how? The killer is wearing a Ghillie/camouflage Suit and blends into his surroundings seamlessly. A lot of the action is set around Gretna Green and Cumbria; together with London landmarks. There are lots of little snippets of useful - some might say useless - information sprinkled throughout: ‘one in three males in the Uk have criminal records of one sort or another’??? I didn’t know that. And some song lyrics are blended into the dialogue: ‘. . . I wore a younger man’s clothes’! Do you know that one or the one I use at the end of the last paragraph? The book is a very enjoyable read; very well thought out and rendered believable by the talents and knowledge (probably gained from his army career)of Mr. Craven. As I think about it; I think it would make a great movie? Let’s wait and see?Highly recommended to all thrill seekers and lovers of escapism.
